Our first shipment of white salt arrives at Ellesmere Port

20th September 2010

After an anxious couple of weeks watching the marine traffic website, our first shipment of white salt has arrived in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. This is the first load of salt we have actually imported directly into the country ourselves and it has been a bit of a learning curve for us.

We had some fun with a document called the bill of loading, without this the captain will not unload the goods and on Thursday it was somewhere in Turkey! One super fast currier service later and it was in Leyland on Friday evening ready to hand over to the Kristen C's captain on Sunday.

The salt is being discharged at Ellesmere Port and we are picking it up over the next week or so. The first load arrived in our yard this morning and the product is perfect. Unlike much of the white salt that was knocking around the UK last winter this product is not a fine powder, it is granulated to 6mm. This makes a difference.

Granulated salt will spread easily using existing equipment, no need to change any settings etc. The white salt has had an anti-caking agent added just like the rock salt from Winsford. In fact apart from the colour it is hard to tell the products apart, they look and feel very similar.
