New line of Sturdy Grit Bins

Is storing your de-icing salt proving to be a challenge?

It’s understandable. To stay in the best condition, salt needs to be kept dry to prevent it from clumping, but it also needs to be easily accessible in case extreme weather hits.

Although grit bins have been a common sight for some time now, many people still do not realise how handy it is to have one on their own site or property.

Here at Online Rock Salt, we have been keeping our customers safe during winter for over two decades and know the difference that a good salt bin makes. That’s why we are introducing our own line of sturdy grit bins that are designed to last for years to come, keeping you and your sites safe no matter what winter brings.

Why Should You Invest in a Grit Bin?

There are multiple reasons why you should invest in a grit bin, with the biggest one being safety.

Did you know that National Highways and local councils are only responsible for de-icing major roads, which account for just 40% of the road network on average? This means that most of the roads can still be slippery and dangerous, posing a risk to drivers and pedestrians. If you have private roads leading to your home or business that are not included on gritting routes, having a grit bin nearby means you can take safety into your own hands and treat those areas easily.

Grit bins are also known as salt bins

However, even if you are lucky enough for nearby roads to be gritted, this still leaves your areas exposed to hazards. Pavements and car parks can quickly become dangerous as soon as the temperatures drop. By positioning a grit bin close to these high-traffic areas, you can keep de-icing salt within easy reach. This makes it quicker and easier to treat slippery surfaces when needed.

Grit bins are also specifically designed to keep your salt in the best condition possible. They provide watertight storage, keeping the salt dry and ready for use. This is crucial as de-icing salt naturally pulls moisture from the air and stored in a damp environment, it can clump together. This makes it harder to apply and less effective in the future.

A grit salt bin can also free up valuable indoor storage space. If you do not invest in a salt bin, you need to find an alternative location that’s cool, dry, and protected from the rain and sunlight in the summer. Garages, sheds, or utility rooms are often a good choice. With a grit bin, however, your salt can be stored outside rather than taking up space in one of these locations.

Why Choose Our Grit Bins?

Our grit bins were designed with our customers and their needs in mind, meaning they are sturdy, practical, and suitable for a range of environments – from private properties to businesses and large sites.

The grit bins are manufactured by Excelsior, a UK business based in Bury. Buying locally has enabled us to ensure that the grit bins are made to high specifications. They are sturdy enough to withstand rough handling and poor weather conditions.

At the same time, they are fully lockable, making them suitable for being placed in a highly populated area or an area with high foot traffic.

The grit bins come in two different sizes: 200L and 400L.  The 200L bin holds approximately 10 large packs of rock or white salt (around 23.5 kilograms per pack), while the larger bin holds around 20 large packs. Having two sizes available gives our customers the choice of a bin that truly works for them. You can choose a smaller option that fits neatly into a limited space or a larger one to accommodate a bigger salt supply.

Both grit bins also come in a bright yellow colour. This makes them easy to spot even during bad weather, like heavy snowfall, or when visibility is reduced, for example late at night.

We’re really pleased with this new product line. These grit bins are really robust, so they’ll be able to cope with the heavy-duty use our customers need. Any customers buying a grit bin as well as de-icing salt should get one of our grit bin kits, the most cost-effective way to buy.

Where Should You Place a Grit Bin?

Choosing the right location for your grit bin is as important as having one in the first place.

Make sure to put your grit bin on firm, level ground. This will keep it stable and make accessing the salt easier. If placed on an uneven surface, the bin could tip over or uneven weight distribution could put a lot of strain on the plastic.

Your bin should also be placed somewhere that is easily accessible when needed, without obstructing any entrances or access points. Pick a place where drivers and pedestrians won't have to go around the bin to get where they need to go.
