How Much Salt do I Need?

Both Rock and White Salt have the same spreading rates and the amount you will need to apply is very much dependent on the weather conditions. The spreading rate is measured in grammes per square metre and is different between just cold icy days and those when snow fall is also expected.

It is clear if you have used too much salt previously. After the snow and ice has thawed there should be no visible salt left on the ground, if you can still see salt crystals (not the red clay from rock salt, residue from this is normal) then you have probably applied too much.

Normally we recommend 10-15 grams per square metre if it is only ice you are trying to combat. If snow is likely to fall, we recommend upping that to 20-30 grams per square metre to ensure that the ground is still safe to walk and drive upon.

You can work out how much you need to clear your carpark or pathway using the table below:

If snow is expected it is worth spreading salt preemptively and again after the storm has passed to help thaw the fallen snow.
